Version 1.1 on the way
Saturday, 03 October 2009 13:38

The code for the updates to version 1.1 have been completed. They are small changes, as suggested by the 1.1 version designation, but will hopefully make the program more enjoyable to use.

The internal documentation is being updated, and the new version should be sent to Apple for approval sometime tomorrow.

What's changed:

- additional buttons to nudge pitch by 0.01%, 0.1, 0.2, or 0.5% (configurable in Settings - Nudge Pitch)

- fix rotation of vinyl to be smooth at all pitch levels

- turn off auto-repeat (configurable in Settings - Loop Playback)

- improve scrolling speed of large track libraries

- open Library directly from Player, and

- auto-track loading (no assignment to a channel necessary)

Site upgrades coming soon
Wednesday, 19 August 2009 11:51

This web site will be taken down for maintenance sporadically this weekend (August 21-23) while we move to a larger host. The goal is to start enabling some more community features on the site to let Hot Wax users interact with each other.

More news to come...

Studio for Windows
Sunday, 16 August 2009 21:35

It seems the real problem with Studio for Windows is that software MUST be installed into a folder with NO spaces in the path.

I suggest unzipping the files into "C:\HotWaxStudio\".

Changes will be incorporated into a new version to try to get around this limitation. I don't have an ETA for a new version as yet.

We're approved!
Wednesday, 12 August 2009 15:11

Well now the real fun begins.App_Store_badge_0708

Just this afternoon Apple gave us the "Ready for Sale" approval message for Hot Wax DJ Player. That means that anytime now you show start seeing the app available on the App Store.

Will the public like it? Will they buy and recommend it? Will they even be able to find it?!

You can bet I'm keeping my eyes glued to all of my stats counters to see...

Thanks for hanging on with me during this long bumpy ride. I believe we do have lift-off! :)

Enjoy!

More new features on the way...
Thursday, 16 July 2009 13:31

It's getting more than a little tiring waiting for approvals from Apple for my apps -- but what are you gonna do? It's their court, their ball, their rules. I just have to play along...

Well be that as it may, I'm still continuing along with the developments to Hot Wax DJ Player. Even though it has yet to be released publicly, I've done 2 sets of upgrades already.

The next round of changes will fix the glitch where a second needle marker appears while you try to manually scrub a track. Most importantly though, we're moving to an entirely new way of storing and working with track lists. No longer will it be a simple directory listing, but you'll be able to see full metadata about each track, including Artist, Genre and Duration. Along with that change will come the ability to change sort order and groupings to help you find tracks faster and easier.

The fourth major change will be the ability to advance the needle position by touching a Cue Point when the track is NOT playing (currently it has to be playing for the Cue buttons to work).

Well that's all for now. Here's hoping the Apple reviewers can get us approved and let us get this show on the road :)

Cheers,

D

Volume 1 - Sole Architek updated
Saturday, 11 July 2009 06:17
The Hot Wax Album Edition Volume 1 featuring Sole Architek has been updated. The new version is ready for OS 3.0 and sports 2 new much-anticipated features: cue points, and direct track scrubbing. To set a cue point touch and hold one of the 2 Cue buttons along the top of each player. When you lift your finger to release the button, a cue point is set, and the light for that button turns green. To jump back to a cue point, just touch the cue button while the track is playing. Rotating the spinning record causes the "needle" position to move back or forth. We'll be updating the online How-To videos to demonstrate the new features.

Volume 2 on the way
Saturday, 04 July 2009 11:38
Volume 2 of the Hot Wax Album Edition featuring Darp Malone has just been sent for approval and inclusion on the App Store. We're hoping to have it available for FREE downloads within 2 weeks. New to this version of the Hot Wax player is the abilty to set 2 cue points per track, and (finally!) the ability to directly scrub through a track (move the 'needle' back and forth) by spining the record. Also included are a video demo, and an animated one to help new users discover how to get the most out of Hot Wax. All of these new features will be included in the upcoming Hot Wax DJ Player.

Visions
Saturday, 20 June 2009 22:43

Well it’s officially been a month now since I submitted Hot Wax for approval.

In that time, in addition to working on updates to the app, I’ve put out 2 free versions, 1 of which has already made it to the store.

But I’ll write more about those Album Edition apps later. Today I want need start at the beginning with the story of Hot Wax...

First things first -- Hot Wax is a tool for DJs. It is NOT a game, or a toy. I can’t stress that enough. Hot Wax is designed to be a serious tool for DJs looking to fill a dance floor.

It is designed to fit right into your DJ system -- so that means users will need to get the right cables and adapters.

I need to make sure that the DJs who purchase Hot Wax will spend a moment learning how to use the software properly.

And though it may hurt initial sales volume, I don’t want to attract people on an impulse buy. Just like with every other piece of DJ software gear, you need to take some time to set it up properly, and invest time in learning how to use it properly.

I had been doing gigs as a mobile DJ since my days at university in the 80’s, but only started building permanent mobile rigs in the late 90’s.

My vision for Hot Wax comes right out of that experience. I built the RockBox pictured here around a Windows PC running PCDJ Red DJ software. The entire rig weighs about 80 lbs!

Since that time I have built numerous hardware and software-based mobile DJ rigs. The smallest of these run off a laptop.

Hot Wax is the evolution of this miniaturization.
